How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 27 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $8.00, under the $8.89 intraday 52-week low set on 26 October 2026. A delay to the 600 metric-tons-per-year Stillwater target or a new equity raise at the third-quarter report would also break the case.
Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

USA Rare Earth has assembled a mine-to-magnet supply chain outside China. The shares have still lost 71% from their 52-week high, because revenue remains tiny next to the cost and share dilution of building that chain. The third-quarter report, expected around 6 November to 9 November 2026, shows whether the Stillwater, Oklahoma magnet plant is on track for its target of a 600 metric-tons-per-year run rate in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The assets exist. The company closed its roughly $2.8 billion purchase of Brazil's Serra Verde Group on 3 September 2026. It signed definitive agreements in June 2026 for up to $1.6 billion of Department of Commerce funding, and it held about $1.53 billion of cash at 30 June 2026. Against that, second-quarter revenue was $5.8 million and the adjusted net loss was $33.5 million, per the company's 10 August 2026 earnings release.
The narrative is saturated: the government partnership and the Serra Verde deal have had wide coverage, and new Buy initiations from Jefferies (2 September 2026) and Texas Capital (21 October 2026) did not stop the slide to an $8.91 close on 26 October 2026. The business plan has better support than the case for the shares beating the market in the near term. The shares now need operating proof, and the next report either delivers it or does not.
Bullish and bearish views on USA Rare Earth, Inc.
The bull case on USA Rare Earth, Inc. (USAR), in brief: A supply chain that runs outside China. The bear case: Revenue is still small and losses wide.
Bull case
- A supply chain that runs outside China. Serra Verde's Pela Ema ionic-clay mine in Goiás, Brazil supplies the heavy rare earths dysprosium and terbium. It joins the Round Top project in Texas, the Less Common Metals plant in the UK and the Stillwater magnet plant. The deal closed on 3 September 2026 for $300 million in cash plus about 126.8 million new shares, though reports differ slightly on the share count.
- Government funding is tied to milestones. Agreements signed in June 2026 provide up to $277 million of federal funding and up to $1.3 billion of senior secured loan capacity through the Commerce Department's CHIPS program, paid out as projects hit milestones (10 August 2026 release). Serra Verde's output carries a 15-year offtake agreement covering all of it, with price floors.
- Cash funds the build-out. Cash was about $1.53 billion at 30 June 2026, up from $359.9 million at 31 December 2025, mainly from $1.5 billion raised through a private placement in public equity (PIPE). The $300 million Serra Verde cash payment came after that date.
- Analyst targets sit far above the price. Texas Capital started coverage at Buy with a $28 target on 21 October 2026, and Jefferies started at Buy with a $21 target on 2 September 2026. MarketBeat put the consensus average target at $33.71 on 26 October 2026, with one Strong Buy, nine Buy and one Sell rating.
Bear case
- Revenue is still small and losses wide. The second quarter brought $5.8 million of revenue, a $1.6 million gross loss and a $46.3 million operating loss (10 August 2026 release). MarketBeat reported that adjusted earnings of -$0.15 per share missed the -$0.07 consensus.
- Share issuance has been heavy. The $1.5 billion PIPE in the first half of 2026 and about 126.8 million shares issued for Serra Verde in September 2026 enlarged the share count. Warrant and earnout liabilities stood at $364.2 million at 30 June 2026.
- The build-out burns cash. Operations used $56.9 million in the second quarter. Capital spending and equipment deposits totalled $108.4 million in the first half of 2026. A further magnet and metal site in Blacksburg, South Carolina is not due to start up until 2028.
- Customer orders are not yet disclosed. The 10 August 2026 release describes a "growing pipeline" but gives no count of definitive orders. It lists turning memoranda of understanding into firm orders as a risk.
- Management changed mid-build. Barbara Humpton retired as chief executive on 1 October 2026. Thras Moraitis, Serra Verde's former chief executive, replaced her, and Michael Blitzer became executive chairman on 20 July 2026.
Price setup
The shares closed at $8.91 on 26 October 2026, down 4.5% on the day, after an intraday low of $8.89 that CNBC lists as the new 52-week low. The adjusted 52-week high is $30.70, which puts the shares 71.0% below it. The shares fell 31.8% over three months.
MarketBeat put the 50-day simple moving average at $15.12 and the 200-day at $18.92 on 26 October 2026. The shares trade well below both, and the 50-day sits under the 200-day. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) reads 14.0. Readings below 30 are conventionally treated as oversold, so this is an extreme.
The crowding evidence points to selling pressure; there is no sign of a crowded rally. Volume of 14.1 million shares on 26 October 2026 ran about 11% below the 15.9 million daily average, per MarketBeat, so the latest drop came without a volume spike. New supply came from the September share issuance. An earnings date is two weeks away. MarketBeat lists a beta of 2.66, so the shares move far more than the index in both directions.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- ~6 November to 9 November 2026, est. third-quarter 2026 report. AJ Bell's calendar lists 6 November 2026. Earnings Whispers expects 9 November 2026 after the close, with a consensus loss of $0.16 per share. The company has not confirmed a date. This is the first quarter to include Serra Verde, from 3 September 2026. It should also update heavy rare earth oxide output at the Wheat Ridge, Colorado facility, which was targeted for the third quarter, as well as Stillwater orders and any Commerce disbursements.
- Q4 2026 completion, Q1 2027 publication — Round Top definitive feasibility study. The study sets the cost and economics of the Texas deposit.
Elapsed catalysts
- Q4 2026 — Stillwater 600 metric-tons-per-year run rate. This is the company's main operating target for 2026 (10 August 2026 release). (passed 79d ago)
What would change the view
The case for a turn breaks if the third-quarter report pushes back the 600 metric-tons-per-year Stillwater target, discloses no firm magnet orders, shows a Commerce funding milestone slipping, or brings another equity raise. On price, a daily close below $8.00 would put the shares under the 26 October 2026 intraday low of $8.89 and mark a new leg of selling that no operating news has explained.
The read would improve if Stillwater reaches its run-rate target with named customer orders, if the first Commerce disbursement arrives, and if the shares get back above the 50-day moving average, which stood at $15.12 on 26 October 2026.
What it trades with
The shares trade mainly on rare-earth policy: US-China export controls on rare earths and magnets, and US government funding for domestic supply. Other US-listed rare earth producers such as MP Materials react to the same headlines. Since the Serra Verde deal, part of the business also carries Brazilian political and currency exposure, which the company names as a risk. With a beta of 2.66 per MarketBeat, broad market sell-offs tend to hit the shares harder than the S&P 500.
Notes
- Warrant and earnout liabilities are revalued at fair value each quarter, so reported net loss swings with the share price; the company also reports an adjusted net loss that excludes these items.
- Executive Chairman Michael Blitzer agreed on 20 July 2026 to restrict transfers of his shares until certain government funding milestones are met.
- Department of Commerce funding of up to $1.6 billion is paid out against project milestones, so the full amount is not committed cash.
