Above its line on the last close.
How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 30 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $90, which would reverse a meaningful part of the October rally in offshore drillers; a failed 24 November 2026 shareholder vote or a refused Bermuda court sanction would also break the case.
Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

Valaris shares now trade as a stand-in for Transocean stock. Each Valaris share converts into 15.235 Transocean shares when the all-stock combination closes, which the companies target for about 1 December 2026. The case for the shares is therefore a case on Transocean and offshore drilling day rates, not on Valaris alone. The 24 November 2026 shareholder votes and the 26 November 2026 Bermuda court hearing settle whether the deal completes.
The approvals are largely in hand. The US Department of Justice closed its antitrust review on 30 September 2026, and Brazil's competition authority CADE cleared the deal without conditions on 13 October 2026. What remains open is price. The shares closed at $101.71 on 29 October 2026, up 32.4% over three months, with a 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) of 85.2. That reading sits far above the 70 level usually read as overbought. With completion this close, the next three months depend on how Transocean stock and the oil price behave. The deal no longer adds much.
The narrative is maturing: the combination has been public since its 9 February 2026 announcement, regulators have signed off, and the remaining dates are procedural. The oil and energy group around it has swung hard. It was rated saturated on 11 October 2026, dead on 18 October 2026, accelerating on 25 October 2026 and saturated again on 30 October 2026. A group that whipsaws this way raises the bar for a single name whose upside is tied to it.
Bullish and bearish views on Valaris Limited
The bull case on Valaris Limited (VAL), in brief: Approvals are largely complete. The bear case: The shares are stretched after a sharp run.
Bull case
- Approvals are largely complete. The DOJ closed its antitrust investigation on 30 September 2026 and CADE gave unconditional approval on 13 October 2026. The remaining steps are the 24 November 2026 votes and the 26 November 2026 court sanction hearing.
- Large holders have committed their votes. According to the merger filings, Famatown Finance and Oak Hill Advisors, which together hold about 18% of Valaris, have signed support agreements. Perestroika AS, holding about 9% of Transocean, has done the same.
- Contracting has continued during the deal. On 7 October 2026 Valaris announced about $220 million of new backlog from contracts and extensions, including a Petronas drillship contract offshore Suriname. Valaris reported total backlog of $4,585.2 million as of 5 August 2026.
- Rigs are running and earning. Valaris reported 98% revenue efficiency for the second quarter of 2026 and net income of $47 million, against a $18 million net loss in the first quarter (8-K, 5 August 2026).
Bear case
- The shares are stretched after a sharp run. The 14-day RSI stood at 85.2 on 29 October 2026 after a 32.4% three-month gain. The $101.71 close sits 10.3% below the $113.42 52-week high.
- The price sits well above the analyst target. Susquehanna kept a Neutral rating on 5 October 2026 and raised its target to $86, below the 29 October 2026 close.
- The upside depends on Transocean and oil. With a fixed 15.235 exchange ratio, a fall in Transocean shares passes straight through to Valaris. Pro forma, Valaris holders will own about 47% of the combined company on a fully diluted basis (merger proxy dated 13 October 2026).
- Middle East conflict has hit earnings. Valaris said about $30 million of negative impact from Middle East conflicts was included in second-quarter 2026 adjusted EBITDA of $97 million (8-K, 5 August 2026).
- Little company guidance is left. Valaris said on 5 August 2026 it will hold no earnings calls and give no updated guidance while the deal is pending. Investors have less to go on in the final quarter as a standalone company.
Price setup
The shares closed at $101.71 on 29 October 2026, 10.3% under the $113.42 52-week high, after a 32.4% gain over three months. The 14-day RSI of 85.2 shows the shares rose almost without a pause in recent sessions. Because each share converts into a fixed number of Transocean shares, Valaris follows Transocean closely, apart from a small gap that closes as completion nears. The Valaris price in practice moves with offshore drilling sentiment and crude oil, not with Valaris news.
Susquehanna's $86 target (5 October 2026) is the only recent public analyst target in company news, and the shares trade above it. A daily close below $90 would undo a meaningful part of the October advance. At that point the move higher in offshore drillers that carried the shares would have broken down.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- 2 November 2026 — Third-quarter 2026 results, after the NYSE close. MarketBeat's analyst consensus is earnings of $1.06 per share on revenue of $562.7 million. No conference call is planned.
- 9 November 2026 — Voting record date for both Valaris and Transocean shareholders (merger proxy).
- 24 November 2026 — Shareholder meetings. The Valaris court meeting votes on the scheme of arrangement. Transocean shareholders vote on the share issuance, which the NYSE rules require when a company issues more than 20% new shares and which is a condition of closing.
- 26 November 2026 — Bermuda Supreme Court sanction hearing on the scheme of arrangement.
- ~1 December 2026, est. Expected completion. Valaris shares are then delisted from the NYSE and holders receive Transocean shares.
What would change the view
A failed vote would break the case. So would a refused court sanction, or any new regulatory or financing condition that pushes completion beyond 1 December 2026. Any of these would leave Valaris standing alone, with no guidance and a price set by the deal. A third-quarter report on 2 November 2026 that shows weaker revenue efficiency than the 98% reported for the second quarter, or more Middle East disruption, would also weaken the value of the shares Valaris holders receive.
On price, a daily close below $90 would show that the October run in offshore drillers has reversed. On the other side, a view that the shares can beat the S&P 500 would need new, dated evidence that Transocean's combined backlog is pushing day rates higher. A third-quarter report from Transocean showing backlog clearly above the levels it disclosed in August and October would be that kind of evidence.
What it trades with
Valaris is now tied to Transocean (RIG) through the 15.235 exchange ratio. The two should be treated as close to one exposure. Both move with Brent crude and offshore capital spending by oil producers. Within the oil, energy and geopolitical group, Valaris lines up most closely with Precision Drilling (PDS), another driller. It lines up less closely with producers Chevron (CVX), Range Resources (RRC) and Granite Ridge (GRNT), and with tanker operator Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN). Middle East conflict cuts both ways: it supports oil prices, but it cost Valaris about $30 million of second-quarter 2026 EBITDA.
Notes
- Valaris has paused earnings calls and forward guidance until the Transocean combination closes.
- At completion each Valaris share converts into 15.235 Transocean shares, with cash in place of fractional shares.
- Once the deal completes, Valaris shares will be delisted from the NYSE and deregistered with the SEC.
- The deal is a Bermuda scheme of arrangement, so it needs a Bermuda Supreme Court sanction order on top of the shareholder vote.
