How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 9 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

Kill line

A daily close below $255, under the early-October closes of $259.93 and $262.82. Separately, a cut to 2026 revenue guidance from about $67.6 billion, or to Skyrizi guidance from $21.7 billion, at the 30 October 2026 report would break the case.

Open pick Medium conviction, opened at $259.93. Since then +6.4% against the S&P 500's +1.9% (+4.5 pp). Kill line at open: $245.00 (daily close); graded by at the latest.

The thesis

AbbVie's growth comes from Skyrizi and Rinvoq. In the second quarter each grew about 24%, and together they more than offset Humira's decline. The third-quarter report on 30 October 2026 settles the near-term case. It has to show both drugs still growing above 20% and keep the 2026 revenue guidance of about $67.6 billion intact.

The shares kept climbing after the 7 October 2026 update. They closed at $272.42 on 8 October 2026, a 52-week high on adjusted daily closes, up from $266.69 on 6 October 2026. They are up 10.6% over three months. Two new items arrived. Analysts raised targets again: Morgan Stanley to $310 on 7 October 2026, then JP Morgan to $300 and Cantor Fitzgerald to $290 on 8 October 2026, all with Overweight ratings, according to Benzinga headlines. And on 7 October 2026 the FDA granted two Breakthrough Therapy designations to telisotuzumab adizutecan (Temab-A), AbbVie's c-Met antibody-drug conjugate, in colorectal and lung cancer.

The 5 October 2026 guidance cut still frames the quarter. AbbVie lowered 2026 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) guidance to $13.76–$13.96 and third-quarter guidance to $3.73–$3.77. Its 8-K ties the cut to a $216 million pre-tax charge for acquired in-process research and development (IPR&D) and milestones, worth $0.11 per share. That charge reflects deal spending and says nothing new about drug sales.

The narrative is maturing: the Skyrizi and Rinvoq story is widely known, four brokers raised targets in the three sessions from 6 October to 8 October 2026, and the shares set a new high on 8 October 2026 with no new sales figures since the 31 July 2026 report.

Bullish and bearish views on AbbVie Inc.

The bull case on AbbVie Inc. (ABBV), in brief: Two immunology drugs carry the growth. The bear case: Deal charges keep cutting EPS guidance.

Bull case

  • Two immunology drugs carry the growth. In Q2 2026 Skyrizi grew 24.4% to $5.505 billion and Rinvoq grew 24.5% to $2.525 billion, according to AbbVie's 31 July 2026 release. The company raised 2026 Skyrizi guidance to $21.7 billion the same day.
  • Analyst targets cluster well above the price. Scotiabank raised its target to $320 on 6 October 2026, Morgan Stanley to $310 on 7 October 2026, and JP Morgan to $300 and Cantor Fitzgerald to $290 on 8 October 2026. HSBC's target is $315 (10 September 2026) and BofA's is $289 (30 September 2026).
  • Oncology pipeline adds two fronts. Temab-A received Breakthrough Therapy designations on 7 October 2026 with bevacizumab in refractory metastatic colorectal cancer and alone in previously treated c-Met-expressing non-squamous lung cancer. On 5 October 2026 epcoritamab plus R-CHOP cut the risk of progression or death by 51% (hazard ratio 0.49) in newly diagnosed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, AbbVie and Genmab reported.
  • Rinvoq is close to a new use. In Phase 3 Viti-Up-1, 55.1% of patients on Rinvoq 15 mg reached a 75% improvement in facial vitiligo at week 76, up from 33.1% at week 48, AbbVie reported on 1 October 2026. The company expects an FDA decision in Q4 2026.
  • Neuroscience is a second engine. Neuroscience revenue rose 20.3% to $3.228 billion in Q2 2026. The FDA approved Juvmo (tavapadon) for Parkinson's disease on 25 September 2026, with a US launch set for October 2026.
  • Defensive rotation favours the shares. On 7 October 2026, when 9 of 11 S&P sectors fell, health care led the session, according to Benzinga's sector recap.

Bear case

  • Deal charges keep cutting EPS guidance. The 5 October 2026 cut to $13.76–$13.96 followed a 31 July 2026 cut to $13.87–$14.07 from $13.91–$14.11. AbbVie's guidance excludes future IPR&D charges, so each new deal or milestone lowers it again.
  • Apogee dilutes earnings for years. AbbVie guides the $10.9 billion Apogee acquisition, closed on 3 September 2026, to reduce adjusted EPS by about $0.46 in 2027, with accretion not expected until 2032.
  • Humira is still shrinking fast. Humira revenue fell 35.9% to $756 million in Q2 2026 under US biosimilar competition, per the company's 31 July 2026 release.
  • Oncology sales are flat to down today. Oncology revenue fell 1.5% to $1.650 billion in Q2 2026. Temab-A and epcoritamab's frontline use add no sales before regulatory filings and approvals.
  • The price has run ahead of sales data. The shares closed at a 52-week high of $272.42 on 8 October 2026 with a 14-day relative strength index (RSI) of 68.4, near the 70 level often read as overbought, and three weeks before the quarterly report.
  • Federal pricing changes are unquantified. AbbVie joins the HRSA 340B Rebate Model Pilot from 1 January 2027 for Imbruvica, Linzess and Vraylar, per its 2 October 2026 release, and has given no revenue effect.

Price setup

The last close was $272.42 on 8 October 2026, which is also the 52-week high on adjusted daily closes. The shares rose from $262.82 on 2 October 2026 to $265.76 on 5 October 2026, $266.69 on 6 October 2026 and $272.42 on 8 October 2026, a gain of about 3.7% in four sessions. The 14-day RSI stood at 68.4 on 8 October 2026.

The early-October closes of $259.93 and $262.82 mark where the latest climb began. A daily close below $255 would put the shares under that whole range and erase the October advance. The analyst targets cited above run from $289 (BofA) to $320 (Scotiabank).

Crowding is visible in three places: the shares sit at a 52-week high, four brokers raised targets in three sessions, and CNBC's Halftime Report named AbbVie a "Final Trade" on three straight days from 28 September 2026. The 30 October 2026 report is the next hard test of that enthusiasm.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • 30 October 2026 — Third-quarter 2026 results, before the market opens; call at 8 a.m. Central. AbbVie guides adjusted EPS of $3.73–$3.77. The report shows whether Skyrizi and Rinvoq still grow above 20% and whether the $67.6 billion revenue and $21.7 billion Skyrizi guidance hold.
  • ~31 October 2026, est. US launch of Juvmo (tavapadon). AbbVie set the Parkinson's launch for October 2026; it starts sales of a new neuroscience drug.
  • ~31 December 2026, est. FDA decision on Rinvoq for non-segmental vitiligo. AbbVie guides the decision to Q4 2026; approval adds a new use for one of the two growth drugs.

What would change the view

The case breaks if the 30 October 2026 report shows Skyrizi or Rinvoq growth slipping below 20%, or if AbbVie cuts 2026 revenue guidance from about $67.6 billion or Skyrizi guidance from $21.7 billion. Either result would mean the two drugs no longer outrun Humira's decline at the pace the shares now price.

A second break would be a further EPS guidance cut tied to weaker sales rather than to deal charges, or third-quarter adjusted EPS below the $3.73 low end. On price, a daily close below $255 would put the shares under the early-October closes of $259.93 and $262.82 and undo the rally that carried them to the 8 October 2026 high.

What it trades with

AbbVie trades with large-cap pharmaceuticals and the defensive sectors. Its October gains came on days when health care and other defensives led: Benzinga's recaps show defensive sectors in the top three on 6 October 2026 and health care leading on 7 October 2026 while 9 of 11 sectors fell. A rotation back toward growth sectors would remove part of that support regardless of AbbVie's own results. Federal drug-pricing actions, including Medicare negotiation and the 340B rebate pilot, affect the whole group at once.

Notes

  • AbbVie expenses acquired in-process research and development as incurred and excludes future such charges from guidance, so EPS guidance falls whenever a deal or milestone books.
  • Humira, once AbbVie's largest drug, faces US biosimilar competition, and its revenue is still falling steeply each year.
  • AbbVie guides the Apogee acquisition to dilute adjusted EPS by about $0.46 in 2027, with accretion not expected until 2032.
  • Epcoritamab is co-developed with Genmab, so AbbVie shares its economics with a partner.
