How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on the last session; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $4.00, which is Barclays' price target and sits under the $5.01 close of 27 October 2026. A move of first passengers or the Dubai launch into 2027 would also end the near-term case.
Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

Joby Aviation's flight programme is advancing, but the shares still lean toward lagging the S&P 500 over the next three months. They closed at $5.01 on 27 October 2026 (adjusted daily closes), 71.1% below the 52-week high of $17.34. The third-quarter report on 4 November 2026 is the next event that can show whether revenue and cash use back a recovery.
The narrative is maturing and sentiment is negative: Barclays cut Joby to Underweight with a $4 price target on 9 October 2026, and Morgan Stanley lowered its target to $10 from $13 on 19 October 2026 while keeping an Equal-Weight rating (Benzinga). The shares have lost 30.8% over three months and, per Yahoo Finance, were down 62.05% year to date on 27 October 2026 against a 12.81% gain for the S&P 500. The close of 27 October 2026 was up 6.82% on the day, which does not change the evidence on revenue, cash or timelines.
Bullish and bearish views on Joby Aviation, Inc.
The bull case on Joby Aviation, Inc. (JOBY), in brief: Flight milestones keep arriving. The bear case: Barclays questions market share.
Bull case
- Flight milestones keep arriving. Joby announced a Texas air-taxi flight campaign under the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program on 10 September 2026. On 18 September 2026 it reported a 3,199-mile autonomous flight by a converted Cessna Caravan, which supports the autonomy programme and not certification of Joby's own passenger aircraft.
- Cash covers the stated plan. Q2 2026 results on 5 August 2026 reported $2.3 billion of cash and short-term investments at 30 June 2026. Management guided second-half 2026 cash use of $385–415 million.
- Some analysts sit far above the market. HC Wainwright reiterated Buy with an $18 price target on 21 September 2026. Needham held Buy with an $18 target on 6 May 2026. Morgan Stanley's $10 target on 19 October 2026 is still roughly double the 27 October 2026 close.
- Prominent fund buying. Benzinga reported on 27 October 2026 and 28 October 2026 that Ark Invest, led by Cathie Wood, added Joby and Archer Aviation shares on consecutive days.
- Full-year revenue guidance exists. Joby guided FY2026 sales of $105–115 million on 5 May 2026, against a $111.775 million analyst estimate (Benzzinga headline). The Q3 report shows whether that range still holds.
Bear case
- Barclays questions market share. Barclays downgraded Joby to Underweight from Equal Weight on 9 October 2026 and cut its target from $6 to $4. Stocktwits reported the firm doubts one eVTOL maker will dominate and questions Joby's production scale.
- A large trade-secret verdict. A federal jury in Tampa found on 2 October 2026 that Joby breached a nondisclosure agreement and misappropriated trade secrets belonging to air-data-probe supplier Aerosonic, awarding about $116.9 million (AvWeb, 6 October 2026). Joby says the verdict is unsupported by the evidence and has asked the court to overturn it.
- Reported revenue is mostly air charter. Of Q2 2026 revenue of $38.639 million, $36.2 million came from the acquired Blade charter business (5 August 2026 results). The revenue line says little about demand for Joby's aircraft.
- Equity supply is large. A $750 million at-the-market programme has been live since 11 August 2026, so shares can be issued at any time without announcement. A Form 8-K filed 10 September 2026 registered 2,419,801 earn-out shares for resale.
- Timelines rest on management targets. Joby has not carried a commercial passenger. The first-passengers-in-2026 target has until 31 December 2026, and earlier eVTOL launch targets across the industry have slipped.
- Defense deal adds a cash call. The Resonant Sciences acquisition is not expected to close before the first half of 2027 and needs regulatory approval.
Price setup
The last completed close was $5.01 on 27 October 2026. The 14-day Relative Strength Index, a 0–100 momentum gauge, read 32.4 on that date, in the range commonly read as weak but not at an extreme. The previous note recorded a close of $4.61 on 14 October 2026, so the shares have recovered part of the mid-October drop while staying far below the 52-week high.
Yahoo Finance listed a 52-week low in the days before 27 October 2026, so the shares have been setting new lows within the past week. Barclays' $4 target is the nearest round-figure reference below the market and is the level this note uses for invalidation.
Crowding evidence is mixed. Retail attention is high: Stocktwits and Benzinga ran repeated Joby and Archer headlines in the past two weeks, and Ark's buying drew coverage. The earnings report is seven days away. Insider sales and issuance are not tied to strength; the at-the-market programme adds supply into weakness, and the Q3 10-Q is the first filing that can show how much was sold.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- Undated, post-trial: Joby's request to overturn the Aerosonic verdict. A ruling would settle whether the roughly $116.9 million award stands.
- 31 December 2026 (outside the 30 days): Calendar deadline for management's first-passengers target. The case turns on it, so the Q3 call language about it matters now.
Elapsed catalysts
- One third-party calendar lists 5 November 2026, which conflicts with the company's announcement. The report shows non-Blade revenue, cash against the $2.3 billion June level, any at-the-market proceeds, and whether the first-passengers-in-2026 target holds. (passed 1d ago)
What would change the view
A better rating would need three things in the 4 November 2026 report and 10-Q: non-Blade revenue that grows, cash and short-term investments consistent with the guided $385–415 million second-half use, and little at-the-market issuance. Absent those, the evidence leaves a modest edge for the S&P 500. Reported at-the-market proceeds that push the share count materially above the Q2 figure would weaken the case further.
What it trades with
Archer Aviation (ACHR) is the direct eVTOL peer on the same certification and UAE timelines. The two have traded as one group on sector news, and Ark's reported buying covered both on 27 October 2026. Joby also sold off while Archer rose after the Barclays note, per a stockanalysis.com headline, so the pair can diverge on company-specific news.
Both shares behave as high-risk growth names, and Joby fell with growth stocks on 15 May 2026 even after a first-quarter beat (Benzinga). Joby's court cases involve Archer (trade-secret claims in California) and Aerosonic (the Tampa verdict), and each can move the shares independently of the flight programme.
Notes
- Archer Aviation (ACHR) is the direct eVTOL peer on the same certification and UAE timelines; the two have traded as one group on sector news.
- Reported revenue is dominated by the acquired Blade air-charter business ($36.2M of $38.639M in Q2 2026), not by eVTOL operations.
- A $750M at-the-market equity programme has been live since 11 August 2026; shares can be issued at any time without further announcement.
- The Resonant Sciences acquisition is not expected to close until the first half of 2027 and needs regulatory approval.
- The company has not carried a commercial passenger; revenue-timing statements rest on management targets rather than operating history.
- The roughly $116.9M Aerosonic jury verdict of 2 October 2026 is not a final judgment; Joby has asked the court to overturn it.
