Private-credit-stress bottom trade now digesting: price -1.7% from the 2026-08-07 close while RSI(14) unwound 83.9 to 58.1, and term funding reopened with $750M of 6.750% 2036 notes priced 2026-08-12. Nothing resolves the redemption question until the Q3 OCIC tally set at 2026-09-30 quarter-end.
Kill line
A weekly close below $10.50 gives back the post-Q2 re-rating band and returns price to the July private-credit-stress range; secondarily, the Q3 OCIC repurchase disclosure showing redemption requests back above Q1's 21.9% of shares or a pro rata fill below Q2's roughly 27%.

Current Thesis
Blue Owl remains the listed instrument the market uses to price private-credit stress in the wealth channel. The 2026-07-10 FT report of a UBS-note-triggered exodus from a Blue Owl private credit fund marked the low of that repricing; the 2026-07-30 Q2 print supplied the first company-sourced evidence that flow damage was shrinking, with OCIC redemption requests at 18.8% of shares versus 21.9% in Q1 and Fee-Related Earnings up 9% YoY to $392.2M.
What has changed since the last note is the character of the move rather than its direction. Price closed $11.67 on 2026-08-21 against $11.87 on 2026-08-07 — down 1.7% over two weeks — while RSI(14) fell from 83.9 to 58.1. Momentum unwound roughly 26 points without the level being surrendered. Alongside that, the term funding market reopened: Blue Owl Finance priced $750M of 6.750% senior notes due 2036 on 2026-08-12, upsized from the $500M deal set on 2026-08-11 to pay down credit lines, and Bloomberg reported on 2026-08-17 that Blackstone and Blue Owl private credit funds upsized investment-grade bond sales following a third-quarter lull in private credit issuance.
The leg being bought is a fee-annuity re-rating: permanent capital of $225.0B generated 85% of LTM fee-related management fees, so the argument is that gated withdrawals in one wealth product do not pass one-for-one into lost management fees. That argument does not get tested again by the company until the Q3 flow tally.
Bullish and bearish views on Blue Owl Capital Inc.
The model's bull view on Blue Owl Capital Inc. (OWL), in brief: Q2 2026 (2026-07-30): GAAP revenue $753.05M against $693.69M consensus, +7% YoY; FRE $392.2M and Distributable Earnings $351.2M each +9% YoY; FRE margin 58.5%; adjusted EPS $0.22, in line. The bear view: The 5% quarterly repurchase cap has been in force since 2026-04-02. Both cases follow in full.
Bull Case
- Q2 2026 (2026-07-30): GAAP revenue $753.05M against $693.69M consensus, +7% YoY; FRE $392.2M and Distributable Earnings $351.2M each +9% YoY; FRE margin 58.5%; adjusted EPS $0.22, in line.
- AUM $319.0B at 2026-06-30, +12% YoY, fee-paying AUM $190.6B, permanent capital $225.0B producing 85% of LTM fee-related management fees.
- $31.1B of AUM not yet paying fees, associated with approximately $380M of expected annual FRE management fees once deployed — a disclosed forward bridge with a filing behind it.
- The redemption trend improved on two axes. OCIC requests fell to 18.8% of shares in Q2 from 21.9% in Q1, and the pro rata fill rose to roughly 27% of each request from roughly 23% in Q1, when $988M was returned at the same 5% cap (AltsWire, Q1 and Q2 disclosures).
- NAV has held through the stress: OCIC Class I net asset value was $9.11 per share at 2026-03-31, unchanged from year-end, with no new non-accruals reported.
- Term debt markets are open at a fixed coupon: $750M of 6.750% notes due 2036 priced 2026-08-12; the fund-level IG deals were upsized on 2026-08-17 after a quiet quarter for private credit issuance.
- Sell-side dispersion widened upward after the print: TD Cowen raised to $15 from $13 on 2026-08-06 citing reduced contagion risk; BMO to $12 on 2026-08-03; Goldman Sachs to $11 on 2026-08-10; consensus sits at $12.62 across 17 analysts (stockanalysis.com, 2026-08-21).
- Portfolio-level activity continues: Wingspire Equipment Finance closed a $140M large-equipment financing on 2026-08-20.
Bear Case
- The 5% quarterly repurchase cap has been in force since 2026-04-02. A third consecutive gated quarter means roughly 73% of requesting capital stayed in the fund because it had no exit, and that queue rolls forward into Q3.
- Absolute request volume is still large: $4.7B across the Blue Owl BDC complex in Q2, against $90M of BDC share repurchases reported by Bloomberg on 2026-08-05 — about 2% of the request figure.
- The problem is industry-wide and therefore outside the company's control. Investors pulled a combined $12.9B from private-credit funds aimed at wealthy individuals in the first five months of 2026, and non-traded BDCs run by Apollo, Ares, Morgan Stanley, HPS, Cliffwater, Monroe and Blackstone all exceeded the 5% cap in the same quarter.
- Bloomberg's 2026-07-30 framing of the same quarter was a fundraising slowdown, published alongside management's easing-redemption message.
- GAAP net income was $11.39M in Q2 2026 against FRE of $392.2M. The measure the equity is valued on is the non-GAAP one.
- The August financing adds a fixed 6.750% coupon to 2036 and, on the stated use of proceeds, refinances revolver borrowings rather than funding growth.
- The 13F reflects positions as of 2026-06-30, so it describes selling into the pre-low period rather than into the August bounce.
- Price is 34.0% below the 52-week high of $17.68. The recovery has retraced a fraction of the drawdown, and the recovery leg itself has gone nowhere for two weeks.
Setup & Price Structure
Reference close 2026-08-21: $11.67. Three-month price change +18.2%. Distance from the $17.68 52-week high: -34.0%. RSI(14) 58.1.
The two-week tape is a momentum reset without a structural break: $11.87 on 2026-08-07 to $11.67 on 2026-08-21, with RSI dropping from 83.9 to 58.1. An ex-dividend adjustment of $0.23 — roughly 2% of the close — passed around the 2026-08-13 record date and accounts for part of that drift on unadjusted charts.
The $10.50 area is the level that matters. It was Goldman's post-print target before the 2026-08-10 raise to $11, and it approximates where the shares traded during the July stress window. A weekly close below $10.50 puts price back inside the pre-print range and removes the price evidence for the easing-stress claim.
The narrative is maturing. The narrative is fully mainstream — FT on 2026-07-10, Bloomberg on 2026-07-30 and again on 2026-08-17, CNBC on the cap since 2026-04-02 — and it is still working, with the shares up 18.2% over three months. What has moderated is the flow of new information: no analyst target has moved since 2026-08-10, no earnings print falls inside 30 days, and the stock has traded flat for two weeks after the post-print surge.
Crowding and positioning observables, stated as observables: RSI(14) at 58.1 after a print at 83.9 on 2026-08-07; consensus $12.62 sits above the $11.67 close, and four of the six visible targets (TD Cowen $15, Oppenheimer $15, BofA $16, BMO $12) sit above it while two (Goldman $11, Barclays $10) sit below; a 13F-disclosed 51.8% stake reduction by Soros Fund Management on 2026-08-14; debt issuance into the bounce rather than equity issuance, at $750M on 2026-08-12; no earnings date inside the next 30 days.
Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)
- 2026-08-27 — quarterly dividend payment, $0.23 per Class A share. Tests whether the declared $0.92 annual 2026 pace is funded out of Distributable Earnings of $351.2M per quarter.
- ~2026-09-08 (est.) — OCIC monthly NAV disclosure. The non-traded funds publish NAV per share on their own schedule. Class I NAV was $9.11 at 2026-03-31; continued stability is the mechanism behind the liquidity-not-credit argument.
- ~2026-09-15 (est.) — further private-credit fund IG bond issuance. Bloomberg reported upsized deals on 2026-08-17 after a Q3 lull; whether the window stays open is the observable cost-of-funding read.
- 2026-09-30 — Q3 quarter-end sets the next OCIC repurchase tally (just beyond the 30-day window, and the anchor everything else references). The cleanest test of whether 21.9% to 18.8% is a trend or a pause.
- ~2026-10-29 (est.) — Q3 2026 results, date unconfirmed. Tests sequential growth in fee-paying AUM from $190.6B and conversion of the $31.1B not-yet-fee-paying pool.
What Would Change Our Mind
The datapoint that breaks the thesis is a Q3 repurchase disclosure showing OCIC redemption requests back above Q1's 21.9% of shares, or a pro rata fill below the roughly 27% achieved in Q2 — either would mean the two-quarter improvement was a pause in an ongoing exit rather than the end of one. That disclosure arrives with the Q3 reporting cycle, not before, which is why the next month contains no resolution.
A decline in OCIC Class I NAV below the $9.11 reported at 2026-03-31, or new non-accruals in the Q3 filings of the Blue Owl BDCs, converts a liquidity story into a credit-mark story and undercuts both the fee base and the fundraising line.
On price, a weekly close below $10.50 gives back the post-Q2 re-rating band and returns the shares to the July stress range. A move that instead holds above $12 without any target revision above BMO's $12 and TD Cowen's $15 would put the narrative into saturated territory, where the marginal bid has to come from index and income buyers rather than from the stress-reversal story.
A fourth consecutive quarter at the 5% cap across the wider non-traded BDC complex — Apollo, Ares, Blackstone, HPS, Morgan Stanley — would show the sector, not the company, still setting the terms.
Correlation Notes
- Trades with the listed alternative managers (APO, ARES, BX, KKR) on private-credit headline risk; the 2026-07-10 FT report and the 2026-07-30 Bloomberg fundraising story moved the whole cohort, and TD Cowen's 2026-08-06 raise was explicitly framed on reduced contagion risk.
- Sensitive to investment-grade credit spreads at two levels: the 6.750% coupon on the 2036 notes priced 2026-08-12 marks the corporate term-funding cost, and the fund-level IG deals upsized on 2026-08-17 mark the leverage cost inside the BDCs.
- Direct lending is predominantly floating-rate, so the Fed path transmits to portfolio yields and to the marginal borrower's coverage ratio in opposite directions.
- Exposure to AI-datacenter and digital-infrastructure credit links the name to hyperscaler capex guidance; a capex reset would show up first in the secondary marks on datacenter-linked private credit rather than in Blue Owl's own reporting.
- The stock's beta to this theme is event-driven and lumpy — the moves cluster on individual headline dates rather than accruing smoothly, which is why the flat two weeks since 2026-08-07 carries less information than a single flow disclosure will.
Notes
- Blue Owl guides on Fee-Related and Distributable Earnings; GAAP net income was $11.39M in Q2 2026 against FRE of $392.2M — the two are not comparable.
- The 2026 dividend was declared as a fixed annual $0.92 per Class A share paid quarterly, so individual quarterly declarations carry limited new information.
- Flow and NAV data that drive the stock are published by separate non-traded fund entities (OCIC, OTF, OBDC) on their own filing schedules, not by OWL.
- A 5% quarterly repurchase cap has been in place across the non-traded BDC complex since 2026-04-02 and remained in force through the Q2 2026 disclosure.
- 13F holder changes such as the 2026-08-14 Soros disclosure describe positions as of 2026-06-30 and are reported with a one-quarter lag.

Identity-security re-rating in its second, sell-side-led leg; the upgrade wave is still building nearly two months post-print — Wells Fargo lifted its target to $150 from $100 on 2026-07-20, collapsing the low-end dispersion. Cyber theme accelerating, this leg maturing; open risk is paying up for a stretched 52-week-high tape.

One-session reclaim failed: the 2026-08-24 close of $433.19 is back under the 2026-08-11 shelf of $440.97, RSI(14) 41.3, 12.4% below the 08-13 high of $494.51.
