Resolved Graded and closed 2026-06-24 at low conviction — the published kill line fired. Coverage continued after the close; the read below is dated 2026-08-25 and is not part of the scored record.

Current thesis

Quantum pure-play basket is in outright hype-cycle deflation: RGTI ~$14.19 (2026-07-17), -27% MoM, and the $14 shelf that held the May CHIPS-stake gap and the June executive-order pop has broken. Inverse quantum ETFs printing +108% and the Quantinuum IPO landing into the tape mark late-cycle supply. No company binary until the Q2 print ~2026-08-10. Nothing in the structure supports a fresh entry here.

Kill line

A weekly close below $12.53 takes out the 52-week low and confirms the quantum pure-play theme has gone from saturated to dead, with no bid until a company-specific contract event; corroborating tells would be an ATM-issuance 8-K filed into any bounce, or the ~2026-08-10 Q2 print passing without a named Fortune-500 Cepheus customer.

Current Thesis

The bounce that framed the last update round-tripped in a single session. The split/dividend-adjusted series marks the 2026-08-24 close at $16.37, 70.9% below the $56.34 52-week high, with RSI(14) at 44.6 and a three-month price change of -34.7%. Three sessions earlier that same series marked $17.91 with RSI(14) at 59.6. Nothing Rigetti filed or announced sits between those two prints.

24/7 Wall St logged the 2026-08-24 session as a basket unwind with "no fresh negative catalyst on the wire": RGTI down 7% to $16.70 intraday, IONQ down 6% to $42.27, QUBT down 7% to $8.32, INFQ down 7% to $13.14. The same piece put year-to-date performance through 2026-08-22 at -19% for Rigetti, -13% for Quantum Computing Inc., roughly flat for IonQ, against +16% for Invesco QQQ.

The bid that arrived on 2026-08-21 was borrowed. It came from IonQ's Q2 2026 revenue of $80.1M (+287% YoY, FY2026 guidance raised to $280–290M), Infleqtion's 2026-08-17 print of $13.5M (+157%), and Quantum Computing Inc.'s Q2 revenue of $5.6M against $61,000 a year earlier. Rigetti's own quarter, reported 2026-08-06, was $5.100M against a $5.150M estimate — a miss, and now below the revenue QUBT reported for the same period.

What has changed since the prior note is that the group's best earnings week of the year bought exactly three sessions of price.

The narrative is saturated. Coverage is mainstream and two-sided — Cramer dismissed the name on air 2026-07-30, Benzinga's Stock Whisper Index carried it 2026-08-08, inverse quantum ETFs including RGTZ printed up to +108% on 2026-07-17. The 2026-08-19 Needham appearance passed with no release and a 4.01% decline; the 2026-08-21 advance of 10.52% arrived on peers' numbers and was gone by 2026-08-24. The $12.53 52-week low is still intact, which is why the label is not dead.

Bullish and bearish views on Rigetti Computing, Inc.

The model's bull view on Rigetti Computing, Inc. (RGTI), in brief: Growth rate is still triple digits: Q2 2026 revenue $5.1M against $1.8M a year earlier, +185%, driven by Novera on-premises QPU sales (2026-08-06 release). The bear view: The print missed and the loss is not shrinking: $5.100M against $5.150M consensus on 2026-08-06, GAAP net loss $52.6M against a $16.0M non-GAAP loss and a $28.1M operating loss. Both cases follow in full.

Bull Case

  • Growth rate is still triple digits: Q2 2026 revenue $5.1M against $1.8M a year earlier, +185%, driven by Novera on-premises QPU sales (2026-08-06 release).
  • Hardware carried the mix and the margin: $4.098M of $5.138M Q2 revenue, 79.8%, at a 42.6% gross margin.
  • Funding is not the near-term constraint: $541.3M in cash, equivalents and available-for-sale investments at 2026-06-30, no debt, against a $28.1M quarterly operating loss.
  • Peer prints validate the end market at scale: IonQ Q2 2026 revenue $80.1M with FY2026 guidance lifted to $280–290M from $260–270M; Infleqtion $13.5M on 2026-08-17, stated as entirely organic.
  • The roadmap number was restated rather than walked back: the 2026-08-19 release carries a 99.5% median two-qubit gate fidelity target for Cepheus-1-108Q against the ~99.1% described on 2026-08-06.
  • Sell-side has not capitulated: 13-analyst consensus average of $28.81 with a $40 high and $18 low as of 2026-08-24; Wedbush assumed coverage at Outperform with a $40 target on 2026-08-03, Mizuho maintained Buy at $22 on 2026-08-12.

Bear Case

  • The print missed and the loss is not shrinking: $5.100M against $5.150M consensus on 2026-08-06, GAAP net loss $52.6M against a $16.0M non-GAAP loss and a $28.1M operating loss.
  • Valuation rests on a very small revenue base: trailing-twelve-month revenue of $13.35M at 2026-08-14 against a $5.67B market capitalisation at 2026-08-19.
  • Rigetti is no longer the revenue leader among the small pure-plays: QUBT's Q2 revenue of $5.6M sits above Rigetti's $5.1M for the same quarter.
  • Concentration: third-party analysis of the June quarter puts the two largest customers at roughly 80% of Q2 2026 revenue, so one deferred system delivery resets the growth rate.
  • Dilution is structural, not episodic: 333.77M shares outstanding at 2026-08-14 with the share count up 47.61% year over year at 2026-06-30, funded through a standing at-the-market program.
  • Estimates moving the wrong way: Jefferies cut to Hold with an $18 target from $20 on 2026-08-07, and FY2026 consensus loss widened to $0.24 from $0.15.
  • Organisational churn into a miss: the 2026-08-18/19 reorganisation split Systems Delivery from quantum processor development under new leadership, and director Ray Johnson's board resignation takes effect 2026-08-28.
  • Two 7% down sessions in five days (2026-08-20 and 2026-08-24) were both described by sector coverage as basket moves with no Rigetti-specific news.

Setup & Price Structure

No base has formed. The 2026-08-24 close of $16.37 sits below the entire 2026-08-21 session range of $16.30–$17.87 logged by StocksToTrade, so the rally shelf built on peer earnings was given back in one day. RSI(14) fell from 59.6 to 44.6 across three sessions without a distribution top forming first — momentum reset, no structure gained.

Above: the $14 shelf that held the May CHIPS-stake gap and the June executive-order pop broke in July, with the adjusted series near $14.19 on 2026-07-17; it now sits below price as a reclaimed area rather than support that has been re-tested from above. Below: the $12.53 52-week low is the nearest structural floor, and it has not been challenged since the July washout.

Crowding and positioning observables, stated as observables:

  • Short interest 61.35M shares, 18.72% of float, 2.17 days to cover at the 2026-08-04 settlement, up from 50.40M shares and 15.16% at the prior settlement.
  • Leveraged 2x-long and 2x-inverse single-stock ETFs on the group, including RGTZ, are live; the inverse products printed up to +108% on 2026-07-17.
  • Retail-attention coverage clustered in August: Benzinga's Stock Whisper Index on 2026-08-08, aggregator pieces on 2026-08-23 headlining the RSU sell-to-cover Form 4s as executives cashing in.
  • Three officer dispositions dated 2026-08-20 — all coded non-discretionary RSU tax withholding.
  • A standing at-the-market equity program means issuance into any strength is available at management's discretion without a new authorisation.
  • No earnings date inside the next 30 days; Q3 2026 results are framed around ~2026-11-05.

  • 2026-08-28 — Director Ray Johnson's board resignation takes effect. Whether and how fast the seat is refilled is the observable on governance stability.
  • ~2026-08-31 (est.) — Definitive CHIPS agreements between Rigetti's subsidiary and the U.S. Department of Commerce. Still a non-binding letter of intent for up to $100M over three years as of 2026-08-23.
  • 2026-09-01 — TangleLab construction start at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, on the HPE/NSF program announced 2026-07-27 under a $5M grant, full operation targeted 2027.
  • ~2026-09-10 (est.) — FINRA short-interest publication covering the end-August settlement.

  • Outside the window: Q3 2026 results, framed around ~2026-11-05 (est.), remain the next company-specific binary.

What Would Change Our Mind

The read here is a theme read, so the thing that breaks it is a company-specific contract with a name and a number attached. A named Fortune-500 or sovereign Cepheus order disclosed with contract value at the 2026-09-16 or 2026-09-17 venues would make the saturated label wrong and would put the 18.72%-of-float short base to work; the last comparable impulse, on 2026-08-21, was worth 10.52% in a session without any company news at all. A signed definitive Commerce agreement converting the $100M letter of intent to cash would do the same on the funding side.

On the downside, a weekly close below $12.53 takes out the 52-week low and moves the theme from saturated to dead, with no visible bid until a company-specific contract event. Two things would corroborate that path: an at-the-market issuance 8-K filed into a bounce, and the September conference dates passing with no named commercial end customer and no fidelity update above the ~99.1% median two-qubit figure described on 2026-08-06 against the 99.5% target restated 2026-08-19.

The reverse risk is real and worth stating plainly: at 2.17 days to cover, any contract headline gaps this name before a reader can react to it, which is why a structural bearish read is not the same as a comfortable one.

Correlation Notes

Price is being set at basket level, not company level. On 2026-08-21 the group rose together — Infleqtion +10%, RGTI +9%, IONQ +7% at $44.62, QBTS +7% at $20.06 — with no Rigetti announcement or filing. On 2026-08-24 the same composition fell together, RGTI -7%, IONQ -6%, QUBT -7%, INFQ -7%, again with nothing on the wire. Two sessions in opposite directions with identical membership is the working assumption for how this trades until a Rigetti-specific contract prints.

The basket is not tracking large-cap AI. Through 2026-08-22, Rigetti was down 19% year to date against QQQ up 16%. Incumbent commentary moves the group more than Rigetti's own filings: IBM CEO Arvind Krishna's 2026-08-03 statement that quantum becomes a meaningful business by 2028 preceded the 2026-08-04 advance that Benzinga attributed to analyst coverage and IBM sector news rather than anything Rigetti disclosed.

Federal policy flow is a shared input with an unfavourable recent data point: the $874M CHIPS Act tranche announced 2026-07-31 went to classical compute recipients led by GlobalFoundries, with no quantum allocation.

Notes

  • 2026-04-18: seed: Serenity/attention list
  • Rigetti funds itself through a standing at-the-market equity program;
  • The up-to-$100M Commerce award is a non-binding letter of intent over three years; its equity component prices at a 15% discount to the lowest closing share price on specified dates.
  • Leveraged 2x-long and 2x-inverse single-stock ETFs on the quantum group, including RGTZ, are live and amplify intraday moves in both directions.
  • GAAP and non-GAAP results diverge sharply: Q2 2026 GAAP net loss $52.6M against a $16.0M non-GAAP net loss and a $28.1M operating loss.
  • Revenue is highly concentrated: third-party analysis of the June quarter puts the two largest customers at roughly 80% of Q2 2026 revenue.
  • Trailing-twelve-month revenue was $13.35M at 2026-08-14 against a $5.67B market capitalisation at 2026-08-19; one system delivery swings the reported growth rate by triple digits.

IONQ

IonQ, Inc.

Broken gov-capital quantum leg, now publicly capitulated: seven-plus down weeks, an inverse-ETF complex up to +108%, and Cramer warning it off air on 2026-07-23. Washed out but not based, heading into a binary Q2 print (est. 2026-08-05 to 08-12) that referees the disputed Pentagon-revenue composition. No edge in a fresh long at current levels.

QBTS

D-Wave Quantum Inc.

Coverage supply keeps producing one-day rallies that do not hold: BMO's 2026-08-21 initiation at $35 closed shares $20.39 (+8.46%) on no company release, and 2026-08-24 gave it all back at $18.68 (-8.39%), also on no release. Three named counterparties since 2026-07-27 still carry no disclosed dollar value; 2026-08-27 Deutsche Bank is the last dated forum before Q3 (~2026-11-05).

LOW

QUBT

Quantum Computing Inc.

The 2026-08-21 group bounce round-tripped in one session — the 2026-08-24 close of $8.24 gave back the move to $8.92, with IonQ, Rigetti and D-Wave all off ~8.5% the same day. Price sits two cents above the $8.22 shelf, under a 50-day at $8.88 and 200-day at $9.71 that were both falling on 2026-08-21. No company-dated news since the 2026-08-10 Q2 print; the bid is entirely sector-driven.

INFQ

Infleqtion, Inc.

Neutral-atom quantum with accelerating government-funded revenue: Q2 revenue $12.633M beat at +116% YoY and FY26 guidance went to ~$43M on 2026-08-12, but the 2026-08-14 close of $12.86 is 50.4% under the $25.95 high after ~$443.7M of twelve-month insider selling. Operating leg accelerating into a broken price structure, with no dated catalyst before the ~November Q3 print.
