How to read this

The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 4 September 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.

Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.

Kill line

A daily close below $28, under the 4 September 2026 close of $28.65 and below every close since early September. Fiscal-Q4 net sales under the $38M guide floor or FY2027 guidance without BEAD revenue would also break the case.

Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

The thesis

Clearfield's shares closed at $31.95 on 28 October 2026, and the case still depends on the $22 million hyperscale data-center order shipping and broadband orders rebuilding. The fiscal fourth-quarter report on 10 November 2026 settles whether sales met guidance and what fiscal 2027 looks like.

Two things changed after the prior note. On 20 October 2026 Clearfield said fiscal-Q4 and full-year FY2026 results are expected to be in line with its 5 August 2026 guidance. The same day it announced that President and CEO Cheri Beranek will retire effective 31 March 2027, with a board search under way (company 8-K, 20 October 2026). On 28 October 2026 the company set the earnings call for 10 November 2026.

The shares closed at $29.99 on 15 October 2026 and $31.95 on 28 October 2026, per adjusted daily closes. They sit 37.7% below the 52-week high of $51.26, and the 14-day relative strength index (RSI) is 45.8. The shares are up 5.6% over three months.

The narrative is maturing: the data-center order, the broadband approvals and the guidance cut are well known, and the new information since the 16 October 2026 note is a leadership change and a reaffirmed, already-low guide. The next result that matters is fiscal-Q4 backlog and the FY2027 outlook, due 10 November 2026.

Bullish and bearish views on Clearfield, Inc.

The bull case on Clearfield, Inc. (CLFD), in brief: A disclosed hyperscale order. The bear case: The guide is far below earlier expectations.

Bull case

  • A disclosed hyperscale order. Clearfield said on 5 August 2026 that it received a first significant $22 million hyperscale data-center order after fiscal-Q3 closed. Shipments are expected to begin in early fiscal 2027, which started 1 October 2026.
  • Guidance was reaffirmed. The 20 October 2026 8-K said fiscal-Q4 and FY2026 results are expected in line with the 5 August 2026 guide of $38–42 million fiscal-Q4 net sales. No further cut came before the report.
  • Federal broadband approvals are complete. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration said on 25 August 2026 that all 56 Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) final proposals were approved, completing the federal stage of the $42.45 billion program.
  • Analyst targets sit above the price. After the August report Needham set a $40 target (Buy), and Lake Street and Roth Capital each set $38 (notes of 6 August 2026). The 28 October 2026 close of $31.95 is below all three.

Bear case

  • The guide is far below earlier expectations. On 5 August 2026 Clearfield guided fiscal-Q4 net sales to $38–42 million against a consensus of about $52.4 million, and GAAP earnings per share to $0.00–0.07 against $0.40. It cut FY2026 net sales to $151–155 million from $160–170 million.
  • Backlog fell sharply. Order backlog was $21.0 million at 30 June 2026, down 34% from the prior quarter and 32% from a year earlier, after a $4.6 million order was removed.
  • Margins shrank as sales grew. Fiscal-Q3 gross margin was 31.8% against 35.3% a year earlier. The quarter included a $655 thousand tariff recovery and a $1.4 million inventory recovery that the company does not expect to repeat.
  • The CEO is leaving. Beranek's retirement takes effect 31 March 2027 or when a successor starts, whichever comes first, and the board will consider external and internal candidates (8-K, 20 October 2026). A new chief executive arrives while the data-center order and the BEAD ramp are still unproven.
  • Insider and analyst signals lean cautious. Beranek sold 1,778 shares at a weighted average $40.06 on 1 July 2026 under a Rule 10b5-1 plan covering up to 180,000 shares through 30 September 2027 (Form 4). Northland downgraded the shares to Market Perform on 7 August 2026.

Price setup

Adjusted daily closes show $28.65 on 4 September 2026, $33.48 on 2 October 2026, $29.99 on 15 October 2026 and $31.95 on 28 October 2026. The shares have recovered part of the October slide, and the RSI of 45.8 sits in the middle of its range. The 4 September 2026 close of $28.65 is the nearest recent low.

Crowding evidence is light. RSI is mid-range, the shares are well below the 52-week high, and the one insider seller is selling on a pre-set plan. The earnings date is 13 days from the last close, which concentrates the near-term risk in one report.

The view that the shares hold above $28 into the report would be wrong if a daily close falls below that level, which sits under the 4 September 2026 close of $28.65.

Catalysts, next 30 days

  • 10 November 2026: fiscal-Q4 and FY2026 results and call. The company confirmed the date on 28 October 2026. It shows whether net sales fell inside $38–42 million, where backlog stands against $21.0 million, and whether BEAD and the $22 million order appear in fiscal 2027 framing.
  • After 10 November 2026: CEO search updates. The board has given no timetable for naming a successor; any announcement would be dated by company release.

What would change the view

The case breaks if fiscal-Q4 net sales come in under the $38 million floor of guidance, if backlog at 30 September 2026 is below $21.0 million, or if FY2027 guidance leaves out material BEAD revenue. A second blow would be no sign of the $22 million order shipping in the first fiscal-2027 quarter.

On price, a daily close below $28 would put the shares under every close since early September. A named successor with a data-center or large-account background, or a second hyperscale order, would strengthen the case.

What it trades with

Clearfield sells fiber management and connectivity products to rural broadband operators, so its orders track BEAD contracting and small-operator capital spending. The data-center order adds a second driver, but no recurring data-center revenue has been reported. The shares have traded on company-specific news since August more than on any group move.

Notes

  • Fiscal year ends 30 September; fiscal-Q4 and FY2026 results and call are set for 10 November 2026.
  • CEO Cheri Beranek retires effective 31 March 2027 or when a successor starts, whichever is earlier; the board is running a search.
  • Data-center exposure is one $22M order disclosed 5 August 2026, guided to ship from early fiscal 2027. No recurring data-center revenue has been recognized.
  • Guidance is stated in GAAP terms: FY2026 net sales $151-155M and fiscal-Q4 GAAP EPS $0.00-0.07.
