How to read this
The red mark is the published kill line — the price that would prove the thesis wrong. The dot is where the name closed on 26 October 2026; a dot left of the mark has closed through its line.
Distance is drawn on a square-root scale, so close calls get the room. Past 8% a row reads well clear, with a hollow dot to show the figure is off the drawn scale. Rows run tightest first.
Kill line
A daily close below $55, extending the decline past the 26 October 2026 close of $62.97. The business case also breaks if ERCOT revises Beacon Point's conditional Base Load classification or first energization moves past Q1 2027.
Not a pickResearch coverage at low conviction. A medium-or-higher call would open a pick on the scoreboard.

How picks are graded →The thesis
Hut 8's shift from bitcoin miner to artificial-intelligence (AI) data-center landlord still has signed leases, long-dated financing and conditional Texas grid status behind it. The shares have not followed those contracts. They closed at $62.97 on 26 October 2026, below the $79 weekly-close level that the previous note named as its invalidation. The third-quarter report on 4 November 2026 settles whether revenue and the first-quarter 2027 energization target at Beacon Point hold.
The split/dividend-adjusted close on 26 October 2026 was 52.7% below the $133.02 52-week high and 28.6% lower over three months. The 14-day relative strength index (RSI) stood at 23.0, a reading that marks the shares as heavily sold. The previous note recorded a close of $83.61 on 13 October 2026.
The narrative is maturing: the story is well known, and the news flow has turned from broker initiations in September to target cuts in October. Cantor Fitzgerald kept Overweight and lowered its target to $151 on 16 October 2026. Piper Sandler kept Overweight and lowered its target to $123 on 20 October 2026. Both firms still rate the shares above neutral; the cuts reduce how much they expect the shares to be worth, not whether they like the business.
Bullish and bearish views on Hut 8 Corp.
The bull case on Hut 8 Corp. (HUT), in brief: Contracted demand is documented. The bear case: The prior invalidation level has broken.
Bull case
- Contracted demand is documented. Hut 8's 20 July 2026 announcement put Beacon Point's contracted critical IT capacity at 704 megawatts (MW), worth $19.6 billion over the base lease terms. Nothing since then has reported a cancellation or a cut to that figure.
- Grid risk has narrowed. On 5 September 2026 Hut 8 disclosed a conditional Base Load classification for Beacon Point in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) Batch Zero process. StoneX called it the resolution of "the largest binary risk" (Investing.com, 8 September 2026).
- Financing is layered and long-dated. Beacon Point's $4.25 billion of 6.129% non-recourse senior secured notes due 2042 priced on 4 June 2026. A $1.07 billion four-year revolving credit facility, led by JPMorgan with 12 banks, closed on 28 September 2026.
- Analyst targets sit far above the price. Cantor's $151 and Piper's $123 targets, both set in the week of 16 October 2026, exceed the 26 October 2026 close of $62.97. MarketBeat listed a consensus target of $143.95 on 1 October 2026, before these cuts.
Bear case
- The prior invalidation level has broken. The shares closed at $79.59 on 8 October 2026, down 10.87% on about 2.2 times average volume (Benzinga, 9 October 2026). The close of $62.97 on 26 October 2026 is well under that.
- Targets are moving down. Cantor Fitzgerald lowered its target to $151 on 16 October 2026, and Piper Sandler lowered its to $123 on 20 October 2026. Rothschild & Co initiated at Neutral with a $96 target on 21 September 2026.
- Grid approval is still conditional. ERCOT's 9 September 2026 market notice made Batch Zero inclusion depend on passing verification. A conditional classification does not set an energization date.
- Operating revenue trails the contracts. Second-quarter revenue was $74.93 million against an $80.96 million estimate, and the loss was $1.27 per share (Benzinga summary of the 4 August 2026 report).
- Equity supply is open. A $1 billion controlled equity offering program is live, amended on 25 February 2026. Benzinga reported on 30 September 2026 that the shares fell after an insider stock sale was disclosed in a filing.
- Credit conditions for the group are tightening. The Information, as reported by Benzinga on 30 September 2026, described new data-center debt concessions that could stall AI build-outs. Beacon Point's notes carry about $260 million a year of interest, so lease-up has to stay on schedule.
Price setup
The adjusted close on 26 October 2026 was $62.97. The 52-week high is $133.02. The 3-month change is -28.6% and the RSI is 23.0. The most recent session close of $79.59 on 8 October 2026, which the previous note treated as the lowest close since the credit facility closed, no longer marks the low.
Benzinga attributed the 8 October 2026 drop across neocloud stocks to a bitcoin slide and 5.7% bond yields, with no company-specific negative news. A search of news and filings since 14 October 2026 found no company announcement that explains the further decline. The sell-off therefore looks like a group move plus analyst target cuts, and that attribution is itself uncertain.
Crowding evidence is mixed. Buying interest from brokers peaked in September with three initiations. The earnings date is eight days after this note. The $1 billion equity program and recent insider sales remain overhead.
Catalysts, next 30 days
- No published date: ERCOT verification of Beacon Point's conditional Base Load classification. Passing makes the grid status firm; a revision removes it.
Elapsed catalysts
- 4 November 2026: third-quarter 2026 results, before the market opens, with a call at 8:30 a.m. ET (Hut 8 press release, 13 October 2026). This is the first report since the $1.07 billion revolver and the conditional grid classification. It shows whether landlord revenue is starting and whether Q1 2027 energization is reaffirmed. (passed 2d ago)
What would change the view
The case breaks if ERCOT revises Beacon Point's conditional Base Load classification, if Hut 8 moves first energization later than the first quarter of 2027, or if the 704 MW of contracted capacity is cut. A daily close below $55 would extend the decline past the 26 October 2026 close of $62.97.
The case strengthens if the 4 November 2026 report reaffirms energization timing, shows landlord revenue starting, and discloses limited use of the equity program. A price recovery alone, without those results, does not change the read.
What it trades with
Hut 8 has traded with bitcoin and with AI data-center and neocloud peers, including TeraWulf and Applied Digital, which UBS grouped with it on 23 September 2026. The 8 October 2026 drop came on a group-wide move tied to bitcoin and bond yields. Results also consolidate American Bitcoin, which ties reported figures to the bitcoin price. Rising bond yields and wider data-center credit spreads are the macro inputs that have moved the group together.
Notes
- Dual-listed on Nasdaq and the TSX under HUT; Canadian quotes are in CAD and will not reconcile to US prices or to the levels cited here.
- Project debt sits in non-recourse subsidiaries (River Bend, Beacon Point DC LLC), so parent-level leverage figures understate total project obligations.
- Credit ratings sit at the project level: Moody's Baa2 on the Beacon Point notes, S&P and Fitch BBB- on River Bend. The parent company carries no such rating.
- Hut 8 has never named the Beacon Point tenant; press reports linking it to Nvidia have not been confirmed by either party.
- A $1B controlled equity offering program is live, amended 25 February 2026 to add Virtu Americas and Virtu Canada as sales agents.
- Results consolidate American Bitcoin (ABTC), which reports separately and executed a 1-for-15 reverse split effective 2 July 2026.
