Current Thesis
The sell-side kept marking up and the tape stopped following. On 2026-08-24 Evercore ISI's Amit Daryanani raised his NetApp target to $210 from $170 while keeping an In-Line rating; the stock closed that session at $186.86, down from $192.27 on 2026-08-21. That is the third target in the $209–$210 zone inside eleven days — Goldman Sachs $200→$210 on 2026-08-13, Citi $150→$209 on 2026-08-18, Evercore $170→$210 on 2026-08-24 — and only one of the three carries a Buy.
The aggregate has caught up to the price rather than pulling it. The 20-analyst average target stood at $186.31 on retrieval 2026-08-25, roughly 0.3% below the last close, with a $150 low, a $210 high and ratings split 6 Strong Buy / 2 Buy / 12 Hold / 0 Sell. Momentum has drained without a headline: RSI(14) is 46.4 against 59.0 three sessions earlier, and the close sits 9.8% under the $207.08 52-week high made 2026-08-14. The shares are still up 34.9% over three months.
Everything unresolved sits on one date. NetApp reports Q1 FY27 after the close on 2026-09-02, webcast 2:30 p.m. PT, for the quarter ended 2026-07-31, against a guide the company set on 2026-05-28: revenue $1.750–$1.900B, non-GAAP EPS $2.05–$2.15, non-GAAP gross margin 69.1–70.1%, non-GAAP operating margin 28.4–29.4%. Goldman modelled $1.81B and $2.12 on 2026-08-13, inside the guide on both lines.
The narrative is saturated. Dating it: the last bearish rating retired 2026-08-10 (Morgan Stanley to Equal-weight, $137→$173); three $209–$210 targets landed 2026-08-13 through 2026-08-24 and the last of them printed on a down day; 12 of 20 published ratings are Hold; short interest was 12.87M shares, 6.56% of 196.23M outstanding, on 2026-08-12; and TechNet Augusta, the retail-facing event credited with part of the August advance, ran 2026-08-17 to 2026-08-20 with the stock finishing that window lower. Incremental bid has to come from a printed number above the company's own guide, on a fixed date, six sessions out counting 2026-08-25.
Bullish and bearish views on NetApp, Inc.
The model's bull view on NetApp, Inc. (NTAP), in brief: The Q1 bar is self-set and below the quarter just reported. The bear view: There is no target cushion left. The 20-analyst average of $186.31 (retrieved 2026-08-25) sits below the $186.86 close of 2026-08-24. The $210 ceiling is roughly 12% above, and three separate desks now sit within a dollar of it. The company itself guides margin down through… Both cases follow in full.
Bull Case
- The Q1 bar is self-set and below the quarter just reported. Q4 FY26 (2026-05-28) delivered $1.948B revenue and $2.43 non-GAAP EPS; the Q1 FY27 guide is $1.750–$1.900B and $2.05–$2.15. FY27 is a 53-week year and the extra week lands inside Q1, which ended 2026-07-31 versus a late-July end in FY26.
- Evercore ISI, 2026-08-24: target $170→$210, In-Line maintained. A 24% target lift with no rating change is estimate revision wearing a Hold label.
- Goldman Sachs, 2026-08-13: Buy reiterated, target $200→$210, FY26–FY28 EPS raised roughly 2% on agentic-AI demand for unified enterprise storage; NetApp named among its top US hardware picks on 2026-08-12.
- Citi, 2026-08-18: target $150→$209, Neutral maintained, citing enterprise storage demand, AI wins and an elevated pricing environment into the print.
- The loudest bear moved the most. J.P. Morgan downgraded to Neutral with a $110 target on 2026-04-16 on NAND cost inflation; the same analyst carried a $175 target on 2026-07-22, still Hold.
- Q4 FY26 execution, 2026-05-28: revenue $1.948B, +12.47% YoY; product $966M, support $688M, public cloud $182M; net income $404M, +19%; non-GAAP operating margin 32.0% versus 28.6% a year earlier. FY26 revenue $6.93B, net income $1.28B.
- Share count shrinking: 196.23M outstanding on 2026-08-12, down 3.83% year over year, with a $1.0B repurchase authorization approved 2026-05-28 carrying no expiration.
Bear Case
- There is no target cushion left. The 20-analyst average of $186.31 (retrieved 2026-08-25) sits below the $186.86 close of 2026-08-24. The $210 ceiling is roughly 12% above, and three separate desks now sit within a dollar of it.
- The company itself guides margin down through FY27. Full-year non-GAAP gross margin of 68.5–69.5% (2026-05-28) sits under the Q1 guide of 69.1–70.1%.
- Component cost is the mechanism. J.P. Morgan's 2026-04-16 note cited NAND contract increases of 36% in Q4 CY2025, 88% in Q1 CY2026 and an expected 73% in Q2 CY2026, forecasting about 200bp of FY27 gross-margin deterioration. Product revenue was $966M of $1.948B in Q4 FY26, so the exposure runs straight through the largest line.
- Supply left at the high. A Form 4 filed 2026-08-19 shows President Cesar Cernuda sold 2,608 shares on 2026-08-17 in four tranches at weighted average prices of $203.63–$206.40 under a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted 2026-03-24, leaving 46,530 shares held directly. The plan predates the run by five months, so it carries no view on the print; it does date supply into the $203–$206 zone.
- The mechanical bid has thinned. Short interest of 12.87M shares, 6.56% of outstanding on 2026-08-12, is a smaller cover base than fuelled the June–August advance.
- Two acquisitions closed in three weeks on undisclosed terms — DataPelago 2026-07-16, JetStream Software 2026-08-06 — so no external model contains their opex or purchase-accounting effect on FY27 margins.
- The advance is a long way above its own trend. The 200-day moving average stood at $123.94 and the 50-day at $169.06 on 2026-08-12, with beta 1.43.
Setup & Price Structure
The last completed session, 2026-08-24, closed at $186.86 against $192.27 on 2026-08-21 and a $207.08 52-week high on 2026-08-14 — 9.8% below that high. RSI(14) at 46.4 is now mid-range; it was 59.0 on 2026-08-21. Price has given back the second half of the August advance without a company-specific headline, the same pattern as the 2026-08-19 session, which fell 3.4% on no NetApp news.
The structure that matters is beneath: the July–early-August shelf near $182.92, roughly 2% under the last close. Below that shelf, the next reference is the 50-day at $169.06 (measured 2026-08-12) and then the June breakout. Above, the tape has to reclaim $192.27 and then $207.08 to argue the August high was a pause rather than the top of the leg.
Crowding observables, stated as observables: the 200-day at $123.94 on 2026-08-12 leaves the price far above a rising long-term average; short interest at 6.56% of outstanding removes much of the cover bid; three target raises in eleven days concentrated coverage into the pre-print window; an officer sold into $203–$206 three sessions before the 2026-08-21 close; and the earnings date is six sessions ahead of the reference close. The base has not re-formed into the print — the last sessions of record moved down, not sideways.

What Would Change Our Mind
The shelf near $182.92 is the last structure between this price and the June breakout, and it sits roughly 2% under the 2026-08-24 close of $186.86. Losing it on a weekly close below $183 gives up the entire post-2026-08-10 upgrade advance and says the three $209–$210 targets bought nothing. That is the gradeable break.
The secondary condition is the print itself passing without resolving anything: Q1 FY27 landing inside the $1.750–$1.900B revenue guide on 2026-09-02, FY27 reiterated at $7.325–$7.575B, and no raise to the 68.5–69.5% full-year gross-margin range. An in-line print against a consensus target that already sits at the price is the outcome with the least new information in it, and the coverage cycle has no further scheduled event until the annual meeting on 2026-09-09.
What would break the bearish read instead: Q1 revenue above $1.900B with FY27 revenue guided above $7.575B and full-year gross margin raised above 69.5%, which would say NAND and DRAM cost inflation is being passed through rather than absorbed — the exact question J.P. Morgan raised on 2026-04-16. A reclaim of $192.27 and then the $207.08 high on expanding volume would confirm it in the tape.
Correlation Notes
NTAP now trades inside the AI-hardware complex rather than as a standalone storage name: the 2026-08-26 double print from NVIDIA and Everpure lands before NetApp's own numbers, and Dell's report follows within about a day of 2026-09-02. Everpure is the cleanest comparison for gross-margin pass-through because it faces the same NAND contract curve; NVIDIA is the sentiment input, not the fundamental one.
The second correlation is to memory pricing itself. The bull argument at Citi (2026-08-18) and Morgan Stanley (2026-08-10) rests on constrained supply converting into price realisation; the bear argument at J.P. Morgan (2026-04-16) rests on the same constraint arriving as cost. Both read the same NAND and DRAM contract prints, in opposite directions.
Third, momentum-factor beta. With beta 1.43 and the price far above the 2026-08-12 200-day of $123.94, broad momentum drawdowns show up here amplified — the 2026-08-19 session lost 3.4% on no company news. Whether NTAP falls faster than Dell and Everpure on such days separates a factor unwind from a company-specific repricing.
Notes
- Fiscal year ends in late April; FY27 is a 53-week year ending 2027-04-30 with the extra week inside Q1, which ended 2026-07-31 — normalize before reading Q1 growth.
- FY27 full-year non-GAAP gross-margin guide (68.5–69.5%) sits below the Q1 FY27 guide (69.1–70.1%): the company models margin easing through the year.
- Product was $966M of $1.948B in Q4 FY26, so gross margin is directly exposed to NAND and DRAM contract pricing.
- DataPelago (2026-07-16) and JetStream Software (2026-08-06) both closed on undisclosed terms — no purchase price, earn-out or revenue contribution is available to model.
- Dividend is $0.52 quarterly (ex 2026-07-10, paid 2026-07-29). A $1.0B repurchase authorization with no expiration was approved 2026-05-28.
- The closest all-flash comparable now reports as Everpure, Inc. Under ticker P; screens and historical series keyed to 'PSTG' may not resolve.

Contract-annuity leg intact — 16 take-or-pay deals, ~$100B minimum contracted revenue to late 2030 — but on 2026-08-24 the tape found a counter-narrative: reports the White House may let Apple source DRAM from CXMT ahead of Xi's ~09-24 visit knocked MU from $966.78 to $910.43 and erased the $10B research-lab pop. Morgan Stanley's 08-24 raise to $434 sets a target at the market while Evercore sits at $550.
