Resolved Graded and closed 2026-08-11 at medium conviction — the published kill line did not fire. Coverage continued after the close; the read below is dated 2026-08-23 and is not part of the scored record.

Current thesis

Three-engine re-acceleration — Shopee GMV +30%, Monee loan book +71%, Garena's best quarter in 5 years — drove a Q1 beat (2026-05-12) and a +19% one-month recovery off the $77 low. Fundamentally accelerating, but the stock is short-term extended above the July 1 Bollinger break and still ~48% under its $199 high, with the Q2 print (~Aug 11) as the next binary.

Kill line

A weekly close below $90 surrenders the June recovery base and the 2026-07-01 Bollinger breakout; secondarily, a Q2 print (est. ~2026-08-11) showing SeaMoney credit costs/NPLs rising or Shopee GMV decelerating below the ~25% FY guide confirms a fundamental break.

Current Thesis

The leg on offer has not changed since the July framing — Shopee, Monee and Garena compounding at once — but the catalyst that was supposed to settle it has come and gone. Q2 printed 2026-08-11: GAAP revenue $7.788B (+48.1% YoY) against a $7.063B consensus, Shopee GMV $38.3B (+28.4%), Monee loans outstanding $11.1B (+62.5%) at a 1.0% 90-day NPL, Garena bookings $763.5M (+15.5%), and an explicit management commitment that Shopee reaches $1B adjusted EBITDA for full-year 2026. The stock gapped roughly +12% on the print, closed 2026-08-14 at $121.94, and has since drifted to $117.53 on 2026-08-21 with no Sea-specific news in between. It is up 34.7% over three months and 40.2% below the $196.50 52-week high, with RSI(14) at 56.6.

What the last week added is arithmetic, not narrative. Shopee's first-half adjusted EBITDA was $478.6M (Bloomberg / Inside Retail Asia, 2026-08-11–12), so the $1B full-year commitment requires roughly $521.4M in H2 — a step-up that gets its first and only public proof at the Q3 report, historically mid-November. Between now and then the name has no company-controlled event. That is the shape of a maturing narrative: the engines are working, the sell-side is already at Strong Buy with an average target somewhere near $143–155 depending on which compilation you read, and the post-print revisions widened a band that already existed rather than opening a new one.

Bullish and bearish views on Sea Limited

The model's bull view on Sea Limited (SE), in brief: Q2 2026 (2026-08-11): revenue $7.788B vs $7.063B consensus — a beat of roughly $725M — with net income $458.1M (+10.6% YoY) and adjusted EBITDA $917.2M (+10.6% YoY). The bear view: The revenue beat carried a bottom-line miss: EPS $0.70 against a $0.75 estimate (Benzinga, 2026-08-11). Both cases follow in full.

Bull Case

  • Q2 2026 (2026-08-11): revenue $7.788B vs $7.063B consensus — a beat of roughly $725M — with net income $458.1M (+10.6% YoY) and adjusted EBITDA $917.2M (+10.6% YoY).
  • Shopee segment revenue $5.6B, +48.2% YoY, on GMV of $38.3B (+28.4%) and 4.2B gross orders (+27.5%). Core marketplace revenue $4.3B, +65.6% — revenue growing at nearly twice GMV, which is take-rate, not volume.
  • Advertising revenue grew more than 70% YoY with ad take-rate up more than 90 basis points, and average monthly new active buyers rose more than 35% YoY (2026-08-11 results and call, per Inside Retail Asia 2026-08-12). Ads are the highest-margin line in the mix.
  • Monee loans outstanding $11.1B, +62.5% YoY, with the 90-day NPL ratio at 1.0% and described as stable QoQ. The book grew by more than half without a printed deterioration in credit.
  • All three segments positive on adjusted EBITDA: Garena $429.8M (+16.7%), Monee $288.0M (+12.8%), Shopee $255.4M (+12.2%). Garena quarterly active users 666.3M with Free Fire above 100M average DAU.
  • Post-print targets moved up across most of the coverage: Macquarie Outperform to $219.90 from $178.20, Benchmark $175, Barclays Overweight $156 (2026-08-13), Morgan Stanley $153, BofA $143, and even TD Cowen lifting to $115 from the $100 it cut to on 2026-08-04.

Bear Case

  • The revenue beat carried a bottom-line miss: EPS $0.70 against a $0.75 estimate (Benzinga, 2026-08-11).
  • Operating leverage still has not shown up. Adjusted EBITDA +10.6% on revenue +48.1% repeats Q1's +9.3% on +47%, and the $917.2M Q2 figure was below the $1.0B printed in Q1.
  • Every growth rate decelerated sequentially versus Q1 2026: Shopee GMV 30% → 28.4%, Monee book 71% → 62.5%, Garena bookings growth 20% → 15.5% with bookings falling in absolute terms from $931M to $763.5M.
  • The $1B Shopee commitment implies about $521.4M of H2 adjusted EBITDA against $478.6M booked in H1, i.e. a second half that must run materially ahead of a first half that included the 6.6 campaign. Nothing between now and mid-November tests it.
  • the largest visible growth holder reducing into the quarter that produced the beat.
  • Coverage dispersion is wide enough to be uninformative: TD Cowen at $115 versus Macquarie at $219.90 is a spread of more than 90% of the low target, and two aggregators published different consensus averages ($155.29 across 29 analysts on one, $143.67 on another) in the same week.

Setup & Price Structure

  • The 2026-08-11 print gapped the stock roughly +12%, from the $102–105 area it occupied in late July to an intraday high near $130.52 (Vantage Markets chart note, 2026-08-10; StocksToTrade, 2026-08-11).
  • That high has not been retested. The close of $121.94 on 2026-08-14 gave way to $117.53 on 2026-08-21 — about -3.6% in five sessions with no company news dated in the window.
  • RSI(14) at 56.6 on 2026-08-21 removes the overbought condition flagged in the July note without breaking the up-trend. The three-month change of +34.7% is the run being digested.
  • Structure remains a recovery off the $77 low, not a breakout: $196.50 overhead from 2025 is unworked supply, and the gap from 2026-08-11 sits unfilled beneath price. The late-July shelf around $102–105 is the level the whole post-print leg rests on.
  • Crowding observables, stated as observables: the largest disclosed growth-fund reduction is Tiger Global's 19% cut (2026-08-14); Benzinga's options-scanner "whale activity" aggregation has picked up SE repeatedly (2026-06-19, 2026-06-25, 2026-08-14), which is retail-attention clustering rather than a flow measurement; and no next company catalyst exists inside 30 days, so any bid between now and September is positioning, not news.
  • Insider flow is not an available input here. Sea is a foreign private issuer reporting on 20-F/6-K, so officers and directors do not file Section 16 Forms 4 — any third-party claim of "insider selling" in August lacks a US filing to verify it against.

Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)

  • ~2026-09-09 (est.) — Shopee 9.9 Super Shopping Day, the regional campaign. The only near-term read on Q3 order momentum, and it is a soft one: disclosures come from the platform and third-party trackers, not from reported financials, so it informs the GMV-deceleration question (30% → 28.4%) without resolving it.
  • ~2026-09-15 (est.) — trailing 13F/A amendments for the quarter ended 2026-06-30 continue to arrive after the 2026-08-14 primary deadline. Whether other large growth holders reduced alongside Tiger Global's 19% cut is the cleanest available positioning read in the window.
  • No company-controlled event. The next binary is Q3 2026 results, ~2026-11-10 (est.) — unconfirmed; Sea has historically reported Q3 in mid-November. That report carries the $1B Shopee full-year test, the Monee NPL print on a book above $11.1B, and the third consecutive read on whether EBITDA growth converges toward revenue growth.

What Would Change Our Mind

The structure that matters is the 2026-08-11 earnings gap and the late-July shelf underneath it. If price fills that gap and keeps going, the market has decided the beat did not change the multiple — and a weekly close below $105 would say exactly that, surrendering the pre-print base that the entire +34.7% three-month move is built on. That is the gradeable line.

Fundamentally, three things would break the read independently of price. First, any softening of the $1B Shopee full-year adjusted EBITDA language on the Q3 call after it was stated outright on 2026-08-11, or a Q3 Shopee segment figure that leaves the remaining $521.4M-ish H2 requirement unreachable. Second, the Monee 90-day NPL ratio printing above 1.0% on a book that grew 62.5% YoY, or provision expense growing faster than the book. Third, a third consecutive quarter of adjusted EBITDA growth running at under half the revenue growth rate, which would make the 2026 re-rating a top-line story with no earnings behind it.

On the other side, the theme flipping to saturated — mainstream coverage, no incremental buyer, continued large-holder reductions in subsequent disclosures — with price still under the 2026-08-11 intraday high near $130.52 into October would say the post-print leg is being distributed rather than accumulated.

Correlation Notes

  • Trades as an EM growth complex with MELI and GRAB. Prolonged underperformance versus both with no Sea-specific news is the signature of multiple compression rather than a company problem.
  • Shopee competes directly with TikTok Shop and Temu across Southeast Asia and Brazil; PDD commentary on cross-border spending and any TikTok Shop take-rate move reads through to the $4.3B core marketplace line.
  • Reporting currency is USD while revenue is earned largely in IDR, BRL, THB, VND and SGD. Dollar strength compresses reported growth without touching local-currency performance — the +48.1% headline is partly an FX artifact in either direction.
  • Monee's the book gives the name a consumer-credit beta that Shopee alone would not have. Indonesian and Brazilian consumer-credit stress headlines are a transmission channel independent of e-commerce demand.
  • Garena is uncorrelated to both: Free Fire bookings track content cadence and regional esports calendars, which is why the $763.5M Q2 figure fell sequentially from $931M without anything changing in the other two engines.

Notes

  • Sea trades on NYSE as ADSs over Class A ordinary shares; founder-held Class B carries enhanced voting rights, so public holders do not control the vote.
  • As a foreign private issuer (20-F/6-K reporting), Sea's officers and directors do not file Section 16 Forms 4 — US insider-transaction data is structurally unavailable for this name.
  • Reporting currency is USD while most revenue is earned in IDR, BRL, THB, VND; FX translation moves reported growth independent of local-currency performance.
  • Monee's 90-day NPL ratio (1.0% at Q2 2026) is the single disclosure governing whether loan-book growth is bought or earned. Check it every quarter.
  • Q3 2026 reporting date is unconfirmed; Sea has historically reported Q3 in mid-November. Verify via investor relations before treating any date as fixed.
  • The $196.50 52-week high is 2025 supply overhead. Price action since the $77 low is a recovery structure, not a breakout to new highs.
